Smile Indecisive as always... :-P

First of all, Hi everyone!!!! Hope you had a great year without me :-P

I have decided to come back to playing guild wars after a year or so. I see there are major updates now. Dervish using adrenaline now? also the whole thing with holy wrath. I mean its kinda too much for me to go in detail how behind I am at this moment lol.

Going back to the topic, I am really indecisive on which profession to be my main character. The battle is between monk and mesmer.

A) What are good and things that you can say about either of those professions.

B) Also what are bad things you dont like about them?

C) Which one do you like, enjoy or prefer the most? (maybe make this a poll ?)

Btw I have played them both, love them about the same.

Thank you and hope to hear from all of you experts out there!

I have both too. For PvP, Monk. There are a lot of Mesmers, not enough Monks. For PvE, would rather Mesmer; but Monk woriks very well there too.

Whichever one is farthest along might make sense. Dervish is very strong in PvP, and a very good PvE character. Dervish also makes what for me is an essential PvE character. With 9 mysticism or greater the hero can keep up an avatar continually, as can a player. Look up Avatar of Melandru. In PvE, condition removal works very well!

Just play a bit and see what seems like the most fun.

Im currently working on my luxon title so ive been doing mqsc this whole summer. In mqsc monks have the most important roles! Its very easy to find groups if you are one. So i wish i had a monk. Mesmers are great fun too tho, especially for doa

Well, I main as mesmer and I love it. The only real advice I can think of atm is that if you're going to play as monk you'll have a very passive playstyle when you're with 7 heroes. You can't for example, wait for all your skills to go off cd and spike that monk boss or whatever if your job is to heal henchmen. Also, it might get boring eventually since all you do is heal and dont have to worry about the specific encounter as much as offensive casters do.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think healing itself is boring. My main is a healer in WoW and I played that for years. It's just that in guild wars when your job is to heal AI, it just feels like you cant lead them as effectively (you might be too busy healing to call a target for example) and it just is a generally passive playstyle. Not to mention the PvE only skills your party of heroes would be missing out on with a healer/prot at the helm.

Still though, you might be able to clear content a party with a Mesmer at the lead might fail at since you control who gets healed or protted. I know you can micro your heroes if you absolutely need to, but some people might find that too overwhelming.

In the end, it depends what you want. If you are going to be playing with a player-heavy group often, healing ought to be a fun experience. If, however, you're going to be alone with AI most of the time I recommend you try Mesmer.

Exactly what I mean. I have been a monk in many games like deletion, prefect world, etc... But they all have and defensive skills on the same bar. Not haVing to put points on different attributes. I love healing but I kinda can't do that everyday. Specially when i'm playing alone. Now going a bit off topic, what do you think about other professions like sin, dervish, ritualist? Any input on any of those classes?

Btw I usually play with my friend, but sometimes he is not on and it might get kind boring.

Thank you again

After I posted it I realized it was not the place to put the thread. It could or should have been posted on monk or mesmer section. I apologize, and if anybody could switch it for me that would b great. Thank you.

I would give the Dervish a try. They have access to many AoE abilities, as well as some pretty strong avatars. They can dps, they can tank, they can farm, and they are great runners. Since you have been gone before the update, Dervishes will probably seem the most novel to you as they received quite an overhaul.

I have one of each class. I prefer to use heroes/henchmen in PvE, so I go Assassin's Promise+Smite on my monk. You really need to have something speeding the recharge of your skills if going smonk. That said, there are rumors that the smite line might see a buff in the future. However, when ANet says "We're looking at maybe buffing this," you can't be surprised if months and months pass before you see it (see: dervishes).

You get groups if you go monk.

Mesmers got a lot of love a while back. They're quite powerful in PvE with the rework of Fast Casting and some AoE added to their skills. I think mesmer is the most versatile class of your choices, as you can spread conditions, interrupt, shut-down, or punish. I have a lot of fun with my mesmer. And you can also get groups.

Dervish is a lot more fun to play since the update. That said, I personally am not a big fan of physical/melee and find that things take a bit longer on my dervish than they do on my mesmer or ritualist (gotta love that armor-ignoring damage -- though there are rumors that could see a nerf). Dervishes are good runners, though.

Play around with the classes you're considering and see what feels best/most fun for you.
